ABOUT SIERRA LEONE
Located
on the West Coast of Africa, with a population of approximately
6 million inhabitants, Sierra Leone is about the size of South
Carolina in the U. S. Although English is the official language,
Krio is the preferred language of the capital Freetown and much
of the rest of the nation. Named by 15th century Portuguese explorers,
Serra Lyoa (Lion Mountain), this mountainous tropical nation
is rich in natural beauty and mineral resources. In the late
1700’s liberated slaves from North America sponsored by
private British patrons, founded a province in Sierra Leone and
named its capital Freetown. Over the past decade, internal and
regional conflicts have left the nation’s infrastructure
and health care systems in disarray. Thereby the people have
suffered heavily, giving the nation some of the worst health
care statistics in the world. However, the future is promising
as the nation now eagerly enters its postconflict reconstruction
period.
